Directed by frequent "Wonderful World of Color" showrunner, Hamilton Luske, and premiering in 1959, "Donald in Mathmagic Land" was produced by Walt Disney Productions and clocks in at a featurette length 27 minutes. The picture was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject) and shortly thereafter became a curriculum staple, widely viewed in American schools of the 1960s and beyond.

The film explores the connections between mathematics and various aspects of life, such as music, art, nature, games, and science. It shows how mathematics can be useful, fun, and fascinating, as well as a source of endless adventure and discovery. The film is narrated by the voice of the True Spirit of Adventure (frequent Disney voiceover artist, Paul Frees), who guides Donald on his journey through Mathmagic Land, a fantasy world where trees have square roots, rivers are brimming with numbers, and geometric shapes come to life.

“The mind knows no limits when used properly. Think of a pentagram, Donald. Now put another inside, a third, and a fourth. No pencil is sharp enough to draw as fine as you can think, and no paper large enough to hold your imagination. In fact, it is only in the mind that we can conceive infinity.” The True Spirit of Adventure

The film was incorporated into school curriculum as a way to introduce students to the concepts and applications of mathematics in an entertaining and engaging way. According to a 1961 article in The New York Times, the film was shown to more than 10 million students in 25,000 schools across the United States within two years of its release. The film was also used by teachers to supplement their lessons on topics such as geometry, music theory, physics, astronomy, and history.

A 1/2 hour length short was perfect for early VHS releases, and the title has been released subsequently on DVD for many years. The film is included as a bonus feature on several Disney compilation films and TV shows, such as Fantasia/2000 (1999), Walt Disney Treasures: The Chronological Donald Volume Four (2008), and Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color (19591961).
