Commonly confused for its appearance with the Doberman, the Manchester Terrier is one of the oldest British Terrier breeds in the world. Descendant of the Black and Tan Terrier and the Whippet, this dog was very popular in the XIX century not only thanks to its ability to track and hunt rats and rabbits but also for being an excellent companion dog. In 1937, the British Manchester Terrier Club was formed. Its members saved the race from extinction after World War II. Finally, after its arrival in the United States, the American Kennel Club officially recognized the Standard variety in 1887.

The Manchester Terrier is an agile and strong dog with an elegant, robust, compact and muscular appearance. Grooming: Frequent brushing is essential to keep Manchester Terrier's fur clean and free of dead hair. In addition, his nails, teeth and ears need a monthly and constant cleaning to prevent infections.

Temperament: Just like many other terriers, the Manchester Terrier is an intelligent, faithful, friendly dog, but also very stubborn. However, thanks to their loyalty and patience are the ideal pet for any kind of family. They’re excellent watchdogs capable of defending and protecting their owners from any strange or dangerous situation.

Training: Full of energy, agile and active, the Manchester Terrier needs to do daily walks and several exercises to stimulate their obedience, intelligence and physical strength. This breed usually get bored very quickly, for that reason is important to maintain his attention with proper, fun, loving, patient training exercises and with positive rewards in order to obtain better results.

Health: Even if the Manchester Terrier can live up to 16 years, he may suffer from diseases such as hypothyroidism, LeggPerthes disease, deafness, dislocation of the patella, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), von Willebrand disease (VWD) , diabetes mellitus and cardiomyopathy.
