Created as a pet for European royalty, the origin of the Leonberger is quite uncertain. There are many theories and one of them affirms that it comes from Germany and was created by Heinrich Essig, thanks to the crossing between the Dogo of the Tibet, the San Bernardo, the Newfoundlands and other work breeds. During the First World War, the race almost died, but the devotion of its greatest fans rescue him until, in 1991, the United Kennel Club recognized him. However, whatever their origins, the truth is that the breed has been used as a lifeguard, pet and as a rescue dog in mountainous areas.

Corpulent, big and proportionate, the Leonberger is also known for its aristocratic grace and elegance. They can measure between 28 to 31.5 inches and weigh 120 to 170 pounds. This race has a solid back and muscular extremities. His head is narrow, deeper than wide, and his dark eyes have a kindly expression. Also, it has two layers of hair, a semisoft exterior, dense and very long and an interior, short and close to the foot, with different colors such as lion yellow, red, reddish brown and sand.

Grooming: An important fact about this breed, is the need to comb them at least three times a week, so if you are a lover of big and hairy dogs and you like to share a lot of time with them, this is the best option for you. Also, the cutting of the nails and cleaning of the teeth and ears should be done every two weeks.

Temperament: Sweetness is the word that describes better this huge dog. The giant Leonberger doesn’t like loneliness, but he loves family life and children. He’s a quiet dog, intelligent, sure of himself, faithful, kind and docile. Also, they easily adapt to different circumstances, including sharing with other dogs and pets.

Training: If you like to do exercises, this is the pet for you. The Leonbergers tend to be very lazy, so their owner must help him with their exercise, such as biking, walking or running. Leo's high energy levels and intelligence make him a super competitor in agility and obedience tests, so his training should start since he’s a puppy.

Health: Big dogs often suffer from hip dysplasia and stomach torsion, and the Leonberger is no exception. For this reason, the key to preventing this situation and give a happy and healthy life to your pet is to exercise him, feeding him properly and take him regularly to your trusted veterinarian.

The Leonberger breed is known for how docile they are. They need a lot of interaction with people, other dogs and pets. Also, they’re able to perform sports activities such as hiking, backpacking, sledding, karting and swimming practicing. In general, this breed is ideal for a very active and responsible person.
