Coming from the cross between the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, the Springer Spaniel, the Cocker Spaniel, and the American Water Spaniel, its creator Whitaker Boykin gave life to the Spaniel Boykin dog. Raised to hunt waterbirds, wild turkeys and highland game birds, such as pheasants, this magnificent dog had its first fan Club and an Association of Breeders in 1990, in order to get recognition of the breed by the AKC. Act that finally achieved in 2009 when the Boykin Spaniel officially became a registered breed of AKC.

Known for his amber, attractive and very bright eyes, the Boykin Spaniel is a medium size dog with 15 to 18 inches long and with a weight between 25 to 40 pounds. It has a soft and curly coat of colors like rich, solid liver, brown, or dark chocolate. His hanging ears, his intelligent expression, his robust build and his friendly personality make him an excellent example of the spaniel family. Grooming: The Boykin Spaniel´s soft coat only requires a weekly brushing and a monthly bath to keep it clean and away from bad odors. Just like other breeds, ears and teeth should be cleaned weekly and a monthly cut off the nails will be enough to keep it clean and comfortable.

Temperament: In everything he does, from hunting to playing the Boykin Spaniel is active and full of energy. Friendly, sociable and affectionate, it’s a dog that adapts very well to different environments and to a family home full of love and tolerance.

Training: Easy to train, the Boykin Spaniel always wants to play and spend time with his owner. Thanks to its great resistance that can last all day and its need to please, he learn very fast. Thanks to this, he need daily exercise and lots of social interaction with people, dogs and other pets.

Health: Pulmonary stenosis, hemophilia A, hip dysplasia, cardiac and skin problems, as well as eye diseases such as distiquiasis and cataracts, are some of the illnesses that can be suffered by a breed like the Boykin Spaniel.
