The Irish Wolfhound is an ancient breed that has been in Ireland since at least 273 BC when it was used by Celtic nobles as a war dog. These dogs were often used to hunting wolves hence the name, although they were also known for their ability to hunt deer and boar.

Today, the Irish Wolfhound can be found throughout Europe and North America as well as in Australia. It's thought that there are no purebred specimens left in Ireland, but there are still plenty of people who breed this giant breed purely for companionship or as show dogs.
