Do sports drinks improve your abilities?

Protein shakes, preworkout drinks and protein supplements. In the gym people go nuts for these extra's to help them be more efficient during their exersize. But do these shakes and supplements have any effect? Or is it al nonsense? Mirwais Mehrab, sports doctor at Utrecht University explains it all. (spoiler alert: professional athletes can benefit from them, but for casual sports they're unnecessary)
