Do Giant African Millipedes Have A Million Legs?

Follow
Museum of Science

Maynard Okereke, the Hip Hop Science MD, meets the Museum of Science’s giant African millipede. The giant African millipede is one of the largest millipede species in the world, with a fascinating array of adaptations. These creatures are native to Africa and can be found primarily in tropical rainforests, where they play an important role in breaking down dead plant matter. One of their most unique features is their multitude of legs, which can number up to 500. Unlike centipedes, millipedes have two pairs of legs per body segment, giving them a distinctive wavy motion when they walk. Despite their intimidating appearance, giant African millipedes are actually quite gentle creatures. With their impressive leg count and unique physiology, they are truly a marvel of the animal kingdom.
