DIY Window Planter Box | How to Build Window Boxes | Painted Window Box Ideas #windowbox #diyplanters #planterbox
Hi plant babies! Thank you so much for joining me today! I'm sharing the process of how I built some DIY window box planters. I had been thinking about making a pair of window box planters for the past year, and figured now was the time, since it was the beginning of the spring planting season.

I picked up some basic pine boards and 2 different kinds of moulding trim from Home Depot, which cost about $100. I knew I wanted to paint my boxes, so I didn't opt to use cedar wood (which is usually the best choice for planter boxes because it lasts longer). I measured the areas underneath my two windows and drew up a basic little sketch with dimensions to follow. I used my miter saw, circular saw, and brad nailer to assemble the basic box structures. I had initially forgotten about a bottom for the boxes, but I was able to use some scrap wood I had laying around for that. I then added the two different trims to the boxes, using my miter saw to make 45 degree angle cuts. I didn't put any trim on the backside of the boxes I kept them flat so they would sit flush against my exterior brick. I opted to put the thicker trim on the bottom and the thinner one on the top.

After my boxes were constructed, I used some of my leftover Benjamin Moore Advance paint in Inky Blue by Sherwin Williams to give my boxes a beautiful pop of color. I did 2 coats of paint, sanded in between, and then applied 2 coats of oil based Spar Urethane using a foam brush, again, sanding in between coats. I also applied the Spar Urethane to the bare wood of the box interiors to make sure it's protected and waterproofed.

I really wanted to mount my boxes using some beautifully detailed wood corbels, but everything I wanted was much more money than I was willing to spend at this time. So for the time being, I opted to use some basic heavy duty metal brackets I picked up from Home Depot. I attached these to my brick exterior using my hammer drill and masonry screws. I then set my boxes on top and attached them to the brackets using smaller wood screws.

I plan to cover up these brackets eventually (when I can afford it), using a PVC corbel facade like this: https://www.wayfair.com/homeimprovem...

Then came the fun part I was the most excited for, which was planting my window boxes up with some colorful spring annuals, which included pansies and sweet potato vine.
