Dereck Lively was a consensus top 3 recruit in the 2022 high school class. However after a year at Duke where he dealt with injuries his draft stock fell a little bit. But he still was a high upside prospect averaging over 2bpg in under 20mpg, with elite athleticism. Which is why the Mavericks took him 12th overall in the 2023 NBA Draft. Lively may not have numbers that standout the most. Especially compared to his other rookie peers at his position.

But Lively had a real impact on the Mavs this season, and was an important factor in why they were able to avoid the playin. In this video I want to talk about how good Dereck Lively was as a rookie, why he’s better than his numbers may suggest, and what his potential is moving forward.
