Demolition of a 150 m tall chimney simulation vs reality

Follow
Peter Kruse

The consulting engineering company Niras A/S from Denmark was by a client asked to suggest how to make an explosive demolition of a 150 mm tall chimney.

In connection with doing that, several simulations were carried out to get the best possible solution for the task so the chimney would not hit anything it should not hit during the demonition.

The chosen solution was a so called zigzag demolition where the chimney was weakened in two levels (at terrain level and approximately half way up the chimney) by making wedges supported by columns. The explosions removed the columns and the chimney fell down in a controlled way.

The video shows to the left how the simulation looked like and to the right a video of how the actual demolition looked like.

The video of the actual demolition has been adjusted in speed to fit with the simulation.
At the end the demolition can be seen in real time.
