A white Pit bull mix named Ghost was languishing in a pound in Florida and deemed “unadoptable” because he is deaf. But he was saved by Swamp Haven Rescue and moved to Port Angeles, Washington, where he was spotted by Barb Davenport, who is a long time dog trainer and K9 Program Manager for the state’s Department of Corrections.

She notes that many deaf dogs can be startled easily, but Ghost had no such problems. He has a laidback nature and his hearing impairment “seems to make him even more focused,” Davenport told King 5 News.

Davenport has been training dogs for the state since the 1980s and believes Ghost is the state’s first deaf dog and he may even be the first in the country.
