Today, let me guide you on a immersive journey through the Daoxiang Highway, which links DaochengYading Nature Reserve in Sichuan province to ShangriLa City in Diqing Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan province. Brace yourself for a visual feast as you traverse this breathtaking thoroughfare, aptly named the "Daoxiang
Highway," where every twist and turn reveals a new layer of natural beauty.

Opened in 2019, the Highway replaced the previous route via National Routes G227 and G549, significantly shortening the travel time between Sichuan and Yunnan. Now, travelers can enjoy the unique plateau scenery without wasting time on detours.

On the 14th of April, 2024, I embarked on an adventure from Daocheng Yading, heading straight for Echu Mountain, whose summit soars to a height of 5,146 meters. The road to the top, a sinuous track cutting through the heart of the mountain, led me to a parking spot where I could safely appreciate the vistas.

From my perch, I gazed out at a sight that was both grand and picturesque. The layered mountains, snowcapped peaks, and the misty valleys reminded me of a fairyland, but it was even more beautiful than that. After soaking in the scenery, I began my descent, following the same curving road back down.

The Highway was paved with cement, and the road conditions were surprisingly wellmaintained, despite the challenges posed by frequent snowfall and occasional landslides. These natural obstacles, however, added to the primitive and serene atmosphere of nature.

Driving on the Highway, you can pause at any safe point to embrace the cultural landscapes along the way and feel the charm of nature. Spanning 200km, this route takes you through quaint villages, majestic tunnels, and more. This selfdrive adventure is an absolute mustdo for anyone seeking to experience the wonders of China's natural and cultural heritage.
