Mink are a rarely seen mustelid, here in New Jersey, they are not rare.. but they are cryptic. Their favorite food: the muskrat. Is a highly abundant semiaquatic large rodent, related to voles and hamsters. Where the muskrat can be found, so too can it’s predator the mink. Seeing these animals is really up to luck, time and place. Usually I’ve found that staying completely still along the densely vegatated Edges of ponds ensures atleast one mink sighting a season, I like to look for muskrat pushups and tunnels. Minks navigate these like a maze. Sometimes you get lucky and stumble upon one sloshing around in the shallows, but boy are they nimble and will disappear in the cloak of murky pond water.
