Hey guys, it’s Liam from Killer Ink and today we’re going to be looking at the Atom and AtomX power supplies from Critical.

Although the newer Critical AtomX has many similarities with the Atom, there are some big differences which adds a small premium to the price tag.

But first, let’s have a look at what these two power supplies share in common…

In our opinion, the coolest feature of the Atom is how the colour of the power supply changed depending on the voltage you’re running your machine on – whether it be 1.5 volts, all the way to 17 volts.

Thankfully, the AtomX also has this feature, as you can see here…

On to the build, each power supply has a fullymachined, anodised aluminium housing with a silicone base and builtin magnets.

The magnets allow both the Atom and AtomX to be attached to any magnetic surface, while the silicone base ensures that they won’t slide when placed on a horizontal surface.

It also doesn’t matter what tattoo machine you use as the Atom and AtomX are compatible with all coil and rotary machines.

Each of the power supplies can be used with or without a foot pedal, thanks to the pedal override mode. If you are using a foot pedal, you can choose between maintained and momentary mode.

To put it simply, this means you can either use your pedal to get your machine running with a click, or you can keep the pedal pressed down as long as you want the machine to run.

For tattoo machines that need a bit of extra power to get going, the Atom and AtomX each offers a jump start mode, which we’ll demonstrate now…

In regards to the differences between the two, the obvious one is this big button on the Atom, which controls all of the settings. As you can see, the AtomX has replaced this in favour of a digital display which shows the exact voltage that you’re running your machine at.

By losing the control button, it is now easier for artists to use protective film on the power supply to keep it hygienic.

The AtomX also offers two voltage presets, which can be selected via the buttons on the side.

Both the Critical Atom and AtomX are perfect for conventions, guest spots and general studio use, thanks to their small size and userfriendly designs. At the time of this video, each is available in two colours: black and silver.

So, what do you think of Critical’s Atom and AtomX power supplies? Which one do you prefer? Let us know in the comments below, hit that like button and don’t forget to subscribe to our YouTube channel!
