Before watching Corgi pros and cons, let's look at Corgi's background and history.

The Welsh Corgi Pembroke, a favorite of British royalty, has worked in South Wales at least since the time of the Domesday Book, instigated by William the Conqueror in the 11th century.

Its job was to control the movement of cattle by nipping their ankles, an inherent characteristic that many protectors of the British royal family have discovered to their cost.

The breed may have been introduced to Wales by Flemish weavers who settled in the area and crossed their own dogs with local stock. Corgis are extremely active and devoted little dogs and are usually good with children. They make fine guards and excellent show and obedience dogs.

They tend to put on weight if underexercised, and their waterresistant coats need daily brushing.

The rarer Welsh Corgi Cardigan is believed to have been brought to the high hills of Cardiganshire in Wales by the Celts when they emigrated from central Europe around 1200 BC.

Its foxlike brush is readily distinguishable from the tailless or docked Pembroke. The Cardigan is functionally built, strong, agile, and tough enough to drive and herd wild cattle, dairy cows, and mountain ponies. It also helped to find and hunt game and served as a child's guardian and companion.

The Welsh Corgis were first exhibited in Britain in 1925, and the Pembroke and Cardigan received separate classifications in 1934. The Cardigan is said to have a slightly more equable temperament than the Pembroke and is possibly less bold.

It requires firmness and consistency from its owner to avoid behavior problems and does well in obedience competition and agility.

There you have it.
