Classic TV Theme: One Day at a Time

This 1975 sitcom about a divorced mom raising two daughters was created by Whitney Blake and Allan Manings, and was based on Blake's life raising three children (one of them Meredith Baxter) after a divorce. (This is the same Whitney Blake who played Don DeFore's wife on 'Hazel' for four years.) Norman Lear was involved with the show so topical issues were part of the mix. Over the show's nine seasons the daughters marry and mom Ann Romero (Bonnie Franklin) gets a granddaughter; the series ends with Ann taking a job overseas and handyman Pat Harrington Jr (who won an Emmy for his role) moving out of town. Mackenzie Phillips's work on the show became erratic; she was arrested, collapsed once on stage, and then was written out. She missed all of season six (dealing with substance abuse issues), came back as 'recurring' and returned fulltime for the last two seasons. The theme song ('This Is It') is by Jeff and Nancy Barry, performed by Polly Cutter. The Barrys were from the Brill Building, a sort of musical assembly line that created some of the 20th century's most popular songs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brill_B...
