Appomattox is a small town in Virginia that is best known for being the site of the surrender of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia to the Union Army on April 9, 1865. This event effectively ended the Civil War.

There are several historic sites in Appomattox that are related to the Civil War. The most important of these is the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park. This park includes the Appomattox Court House, as well as several other homes and buildings that were used by both the Union and Confederate armies during the war.

Another important site in Appomattox is the McLean House. This house was the home of Wilmer McLean, who was a local farmer. The surrender was actually signed in the parlor of this house.

The Appomattox Station Battlefield is also worth visiting. This battlefield was the site of a small battle that took place on April 8, 1865. This battle helped to prevent the Confederate Army from escaping from Appomattox.
