► THIS VIDEO will provide an insightful exploration into the complexities of chronic kidney disease (CKD), focusing on its most common causes. It's a mustwatch for medical students eager to understand the multifaceted nature of CKD, as the lecturer meticulously subdivides the conditions based on the affected parts of the nephron, including the tubules, interstitium, vascular component, glomerular component, and postrenal aspects.

We start with an indepth look at tubules and interstitiumrelated diseases. Here, polycystic kidney disease takes center stage, recognized as the most prevalent genetic disease among adults. This segment delves into its autosomal dominant nature, associated PKD1 and PKD2 mutations, and how these mutations affect epithelial cell cilia. Also discussed are the disease's progression towards renal replacement therapy and current treatment limitations. Pediatric nephrology is highlighted too, emphasizing the autosomal recessive variant that presents in childhood, often leading to kidney and liver transplants. ‍⚕

Furthermore, the video addresses autoimmune diseases affecting the tubuleinterstitial region, such as Sjogren's syndrome and sarcoidosis. Sjogren's is presented with its hallmark features destruction of lacrimal and salivary glands and sarcoidosis, defined by noncaseating granulomas. Both conditions are linked to distinct inflammatory infiltrates, crucial for understanding their impacts on kidney function.

The vascular compartment of the kidney is another critical area covered. Hypertensive vasculopathy and hypertensive nephrosclerosis, common causes of dialysis in the United States, are thoroughly examined. In addition, renal atheroembolic disease is described, underscoring its role in acute kidney injury and progression to chronic disease.

Lastly, the postrenal aspects of CKD are discussed, highlighting conditions like benign prostatic hyperplasia, urethral strictures, and nephrolithiasis. The impact of prolonged urinary obstruction and its consequences on kidney parenchyma are thoroughly analyzed, providing a comprehensive understanding of these conditions.
