My husband is handy and built these beautiful boxes you see in this video.

Each box should be at least 12 inches W x 12 inches L x 12 inches D and at least 36 inches tall in the back to allow for the sloped roof. The sloped roof prevents roosting at night on the top of the boxes.

My husband built my chicken nest boxes. He used small to medium wood screws and a power drill. One box per 3 to 4 hens is the recommendation however you can add more.

Materials needed:
Plywood
1x2 board for perch
Small nails or wood screws
Hammer or nail gun
Manual or electric saw
Saw horses
Two wall mount brackets for back of boxes
Sealer for wood and optional nontoxic paint if you wish.

We used the pressure treated plywood for the walls, floor of box and roof. Then 1x2 pinewood boards for the perches that ran across the front of the boxes for the chickens to stand on.

We used wood sealer on the boxes and then painted them with nontoxic paint. We chose green but use any color you like.

Add wall mounts to place the boxes 2 feet off the floor of the coop on the wall. Always hang the boxes lower than the roosting bars.

Sprinkle DE in the bottom of the boxes, Use a good amount of straw or hay in the boxes. I put one white ceramic egg in each nest to train the hens where to lay.

Providing your hens with a clean, safe place to lay their eggs minimizes damage to the eggs and ensures you collect clean, fresh eggs.
