Chesapeake Bay retriever:
Chessie can trace its roots to, naturally, the Chesapeake Bay area of Maryland and Virginia in the early 1800s.
Waterfowl hunters in the region needed an athletic dog that could retrieve their game swimming in frigid waters.
Their history began in 1807 when two Newfoundland puppies were rescued from a distressed British ship off the coast of Maryland.
Chessie was developed from a variety of breeds, including the Newfoundland, Irish water spaniel, and hounds.
It had incredible stamina, a wide chest that could break through the ice in the water, strong swimming legs, and even webbed feet.
Dogs of this type have been known to retrieve up to 300 ducks from the bay in a single day and became known as the Chesapeake Bay retriever.
Later declared the official dog of Maryland, this breed is also the mascot of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
Known by fans simply as a “Chessie,” it was one of the first nine breeds registered in America in 1878.
