Chalabre is a beautiful town in the foothills of the Pyrenees in the heart of Cathar country, with Cathar castles perched impossibly on top of rocky mountain peaks all in a 45 minute driving perimeter. It's an hour from the nearest ski resort and a beautiful 90 minute drive past miles of vineyards to the Mediterranean. The town itself has a bakery, two butcher shops, two grocery stores, a pharmacy, florist, hair salon, a gas station and repair shop with competent mechanics. The population is about 1200. Houses (ranging from 600 years old to, more commonly 250 years old) have been being bought very inexpensively and being renovated, while the town itself is constantly kept clean and improved by the town. 1/2 of our 'ring road' has been renovated to a very high standard with the next phase scheduled for September 2022. It's one of France's best kept secrets. And it's not the sort of town that will see any new developments sprawling into the pristine hills. No, once all the old houses are bought, that will be that.
