Description:
The hoist is a combination of a fixed and a loose pulley, or several pairs of pulleys. These can be placed one above the other in a common yoke, in the case of ship hoists for tensioning sails and ropes (socalled "talje", English tackle) they are placed next to each other on a common axis.

The hoist combines the advantages of a free and a fixed pulley: it multiplies the applied force, which can act downwards. When using more rollers, the required force F is calculated according to the formula: F = G / 2n, where G is the weight of the load and free rollers, n is the number of free rollers.

The invention of the hoist is attributed to Archimedes, who allegedly dragged a loaded warship into port with his help. It is also called Archimedes' hoist after him, where the movable end of the rope above the free pulley is hung on the yoke of another free pulley. Then it holds that the force decreases according to the relation F = G / 2n, where n is the number of really free pulleys.
