Centrifugal and centripetal force / The Rotor ride

Follow
charlesleflamand

This video shows the impact of the centrifugal and centripetal forces on a group of people in a Rotor fairground attraction at Sinksenfoor in Antwerp, Belgium.
A reallife situation often explains the underlying physics better than a school book would.
As the drum of the Rotor accelerates up to 30 rpm, the floor under the people is moving lower and the people seem to be glued to the rotating inner wall of the attraction until the rotation speed is lowered after which the people slowly slide down again.
The physics part is explained indepth with hardcoded text in the video.

Interesting additional info:

The equation of centrifugal force: F = m x v2 / r or F = Mass (m) x velocity (v)2 / radius (r)
In the video example: F = 70 kg x (11 m/s)2 / 3.5 m = 2420 N (kgm/s2)
At average gravity on Earth (conventionally, g = 9.80665 m/s2), a kilogram mass exerts a force of about 9.8 newtons. The weight of an average adult exerts a force (gravity) of about 608 N.
608 N = 62 kg × 9.80665 m/s2 (where 62 kg is the world average adult mass).
