For this two year old grizzly, the world just got a little bigger and unsafe. Leading up to seeing this guy on his own, he was still traveling with mom and his two sisters. His mom usually dispersed her cubs in the past very early on when they were two, but she appeared to be holding onto them until while day napping in a ravine, a male bear stormed the family killing the one female cub and fighting with mom. Eventually the male and the mom left the area and the remaining two cubs were on their own to figure things out. To my surprise the two siblings did not emerge from the ravinee together and spent the entire season apart.
In this video you can see the very alert and cautious grizzly cub/sub adult in early May with the last clip in the field being in late September. He chose to stay in his mom's homerange, including staying close to human activity to avoid the dangers of encountering large dominant males. Besides his close approximatity, he was never an issue and in typical male fashion......moved on out of his mom's range once he started putting on some size the following year.
