A man, Father Suger, proposed an innovative architectural project to the glory of the Church. He imagined, in SaintDenis, the construction of a monumental Gothic building. The clergyman wants it to be spacious to accommodate all the faithful and wants light to enter. Many were hostile to this plan, notably the powerful monk Bernard of Clairvaux. But Suger holds on. On June 11, 1144, the basilica of SaintDenis was inaugurated.
