It's cherry blossom season in Japan and I've finally managed another trip to the rural areas of Japan! This time is a small castle & port town called Maizuru (population around 84,000) in the northern part of Kyoto prefecture. It faces the Japan sea and used to be one of the biggest navy bases for Japan from Meiji to the early Showa era. Usually the smaller & undeveloped the towns are, the more traditional machiya or kominka houses there are left. I was able to visit the different districts of west Maizuru and could find several traditional machiya houses that were on sale (for a few mil yen).
