In Part 1 of our discussion on The Marrow of Tradition, we welcome editor Autumn Womack to discuss Charles W. Chestnut's biography, his ambitions in writing the novel, the historical realities depicted in it, and some of its major characters.

Autumn Womack is an Assistant Professor in the departments of African American Studies and English at Princeton University, where she specializes in latenineteenth and earlytwentiethcentury African American literary culture. She is the author of The Matter of Black Living: The Aesthetic Experiment of Racial Data, 1880–1930 (2022).
