Care about Root Flare - In the Garden with Dave Forehand

Follow
The Dallas Arboretum

Learn about this vital, but oftenoverlooked element of tree care, a healthy root flair, from Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens VP of Gardens Dave Forehand.

Show notes:
Introducing what a root flare is where the roots of the tree transition to the trunk of the tree, typically visible above ground.
00:45 Dave gets comfortable with a root flare and explains why an exposed root flare is important; the bark of the trunk isn't designed to be constantly moist and will begin to decay if it is buried. Roots, on the other hand, are supposed to be wet but can grow bark if exposed for prolonged periods of time.
02:00 an example of digging mulch and "mulch volcanoes" away from the side of a tree to reexpose the root flare
02:20 introducing an air spade, a tool that blow highpressure air to expose the root flare by removing debris and soil, all without harming the tree
02:55 Dave shows and example of a tree that recently had its root flare exposed.
03:45 Outro. Care for your trees and visit us at the Dallas Arboretum to see how we are for our trees.
