The name Capalbio seems to derive from Caput Album or Campus Albus, due to the white alabasters that characterize the place, but more likely it comes from "Capo d'Alveo", from the name that the castle built in the Middle Ages above the river called "Pissia" took.

The Capalbio Castle was part of Charlemagne's donation to the Abbey of Saints Anastasio and Vincenzo alle Tre Fontane in 805.
