Capacitors in series? What happens and when to use series capacitors

What happens when you connect capacitors in series? It's quite counterintuitive, I think, but their combined capacitance drops. For example, if you connect two identical 100uF caps in series, their combined capacitance will be just 50uF.

However, what increases is the maximum voltage the caps can handle together. For example, if you connect two identical 50V caps in series, together they will work at up to 100V.

Capacitors in series are used to get a higher operating voltage rating hundreds or even thousands of volts, if needed. It is also possible to connect supercapacitors in series to get a higher voltage. Supercaps usually have a very low voltage about 2.7V.
