Canadian Pacific began as a promise by the Canadian government to British Columbia to connect it to the rest of Canada via a transcontinental railroad. This railroad was ultimately built by the Canadian Pacific Railway, which quickly bloomed into a transportation network far beyond its original scope. At its height, it included thousands of miles of railroad, a massive fleet of ships on the Atlantic, Pacific, and smaller waterways, and a collection of premier chateaustyle hotels across Canada. Eventually, it even included air service.
