Answering the age old question. Can you weld using an off grid solar system?

Lots of off gridders like to dabble in some welding from time to time. Here i'm showing it can be done using the Victron Multiplus 2 with no real issues.

I would make sure you keep the welding current down which means you might have to go a bit slower than usual and I would be using a larger 5Kva Multiplus or an even larger Quattro especially if you intend to weld regularly. If going with a larger inverter you will need larger batteries and associated hardware to have a properly designed system.

The BMV712 was used to monitor power going out of the battery showing the DC power consumption. Solar array was switched off except for the last part of the test to show actual power consumption. Temperature at time of recording was 25 degrees. You should allow for some derating of your inverter at higher temperatures.
