Can blind cats have a normal life?

Follow
The Orphan Pet

Pet cats can go bind due to a degenerative disease or old age, but when it comes to strays, blindness is one of the most common problems we rescuers have to deal with. It is very common that cats who live on the streets (not vaccinated, not neutered and not properly taken care of) will suffer from respiratory infections that if left untreated for too long, can have long term effect on their sight. Some of the adult cats we rescue were not born blind, but lost their sight gradually as the infection progressed untreated. The mother cat can transfer the infection to her kittens also. Some rescue kittens, if treated soon enough, can be cured and have their vision restored, and some can't. Blind cats and kittens are not as easy to rehome as healthy, seeing cats, mainly because they are considered handicapped, but actually, they are not. It only takes them a few days to get used to their new surroundings, and after they feel confident and safe enough, they can have the life of any other normal seeing cat.
