Connected by El Camino Real (The Royal Road), the missions of California were founded by Father Junipero Serra and other Spanish priests, and they play an important role in California history. There were 21 California mission churches, and many of them are preserved today to allow visitors to walk the grounds and explore the buildings, including the church, the cemetery, the vestment room, the winery, and the museum, which originally consisted of rooms like carpenter shops, a weaving room, and sleeping quarters. The missions are a great way for children to learn about the history of California and what are the California missions.
