The Tauernbahn, Tauern Railway runs between SchwarzachSt. Veit in the province of Salzburg and SpittalMillstättersee in Carinthia. It is part of one of Europe's most important northsouth trunk routes. The standard gauge railway line is 79 km long and climbs the High Tauern range of the Central Eastern Alps with a maximum incline of 3%, crossing the Alps through the 8,371 m long Tauern Tunnel. It is one of Europe's highest standard gauge railways and the third highest in Austria.
