Buxa tiger reserve forest is situated in Alipurduar district, the forest has a coverage area of approximately 760 sq.km. Buxa was declared as tiger reserve in 1983 as the 15th tiger reserve of India and got the status of a National park in 1992. Northern boundary of this forest is connected with international boundary of Bhutan, eastern boundary touches with Assam and NH31C runs through this forest. Buxa is rich in biodiversity and has a great collection of rare orchids and medicinal plants. The diversity of mammals in Buxa Tiger Reserve ranks second highest amongst all the Tiger Reserves of India.
Apart from Bengal Tiger the reserve is home to exquisite wild animals such as Leopards, Malayan Giant Squirrels, Mongooses, Asian Elephants, Pythons, Monitor Lizard and different species of land tortoises. One of the rarest birds of India, the Blacknecked Crane can be sighted in the Reserve during the early winter. The authority of Buxa Tiger Reserve organizes Bird festival for bird watching and is one of the famous tourist destinations among wildlife enthusiasts in Bengal. Apart from the National Park, a tourist can also explore the beauty of the peaceful ambience of the surrounding areas. One such place is Rajabhatkhawa, which is a scenic forest village also known as the gateway to the Buxa Tiger Reserve. For the history fans, Rajabhatkhawa hosts a museum which depicts the historical tales of the kings.
