The Making of Marram

In our initial video, some may have noticed that we had installed a generator prior to completing the deck installation. The generator in question was an AC 3phase 21kW unit. Initially, our plan was to utilize three inverters to serve as charging systems for a 48 DC bank, as well as range extenders. However, after careful consideration, we opted to remove this setup and transition to a more efficient 48volt DC generator.

Given that we already possessed a Lombardini generator featuring a 1404 motor, we decided to disassemble it and retrofit a 48volt DC permanent magnet alternator. To control this setup, we integrated a DATAKOMDKG379 controller. This controller is capable of managing the motor/alternator based on the required voltage/load for direct charging of the 48volt bank. Additionally, it can output up to 400 amps to drive the motors.
The process of integrating these components has presented its challenges, but initial tests indicate that the system is functioning according to our desired specifications. We have encountered a minor setback with the throttle actuator lacking sufficient torque to cover the full throttle range. Nonetheless, we are confident that we are on track to resolve this issue and achieve our intended outcome.

Marram is a Dix 470 blue water cruising catamaran designed by Dudley Dix and is intended to cruise the oceans of the world. She is being built in Melbourne Australia and is the second 470 being built, we started our journey around 2014 and began looking for a boat thinking about what we wanted. We looked at production boats & customs boats, in the end we fell in love with the Dix design. We took a few years to sort ourselves out and build our shed, during the shed building phase we worked closely with Dudley and Kevin (who owns EXO Marine), we choose to build our own CNC router and cut the kit ourselves, Kevin supplied us with the cut files and we were off and running in 2016.
