The fifth annual Heartland Challenge featured a record 126 applicants, which were narrowed down to 12 semifinalist teams representing nine universities and nine states.
Those teams descended on Northwest Arkansas in April to compete for a $100,000 prize pool. This year's winner was Telo, a startup from the University of Minnesota that's developing assistive walking devices with integrated technology.
Designed to simulate the process of raising venture capital for a highgrowth enterprise, the Heartland Challenge is the first global student startup competition in Arkansas and has awarded nearly $500,000 since it was first held virtually in Spring 2020.
