The Brazilian Shorthair has roots going back to the everyday street cats of Brazil. This is a charismatic and outgoing feline who’s happy to engage in human interaction. These cats have lots of street smarts and are very curious creatures, so you’ll need to be able to provide a home environment that’s full of playtime with room to explore.

1. Brazilian Shorthair's History.

Fans of the Brazilian Shorthair like to speculate that their origin story goes all the way back to the 15 hundreds when European sailors first started to bring cats along on journeys to Brazil. The breed's development is attributed to Paulo Samuel Ruschi, who also founded Brazil's Cat Federation.

The idea behind the Brazilian Shorthair was to channel the personality and traits of Brazilian street cats into a purebred feline.

The World Cat Federation officially approved the Brazilian Shorthair as a purebred cat in 19 98.

These days, you can find Brazilian Shorthairs in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. So make sure to consider adoption if you decide that this is the breed for you.


2. Brazilian Shorthair Appearance.

The Brazilian cats are medium to largesized with a muscular yet elegant body. The cats have slightly curved body stature, and are more slender than lender than British Shorthairs and American Shorthairs. The head of the cat is slightly longer with mediumsized ears of a rounded tip. The tail of the cat should not be too broad at the base and it gets slightly tapered towards the end. The eyes of the cat are large and expressive and give the impression as if the cat is in perpetual shock mode.


3. Brazilian Shorthair's Height and size.

The Brazilian Shorthair cat is known for being a fairly large cat. The males will usually grow to a maximum of 14 inches at the shoulders, which is pretty large for a domestic cat.

Females and smaller males will usually grow to 12 to 13 inches at the shoulders, which is still pretty big. This cat has a very sleek and elegant appearance, a lean and muscular body, with an ideally proportioned head, tail, and legs.

They do have fairly large pointed ears.


4. Brazilian Shorthair's Lifespan.

The Brazilian Shorthair is a fairly healthy cat, and when properly looked after can easily lie as long as 20 or even 22 years. However, their average age tends to be around 17 or 18 years old, which is actually still pretty longlived.
