Bluntnose Sixgill Shark

This beautiful male bluntnose sixgill shark (Hexanchus griseus) measured over 2 meters (6.5 feet) in length. It was seen while exploring off the north coast of Puerto Rico during the third Voyage to the Ridge 2022 expedition on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer.

Fun facts about these sharks:
They only have one dorsal fin whereas most shark species have two dorsal fins
They are believed to live up to 80 years!
They are typically found in deeper waters (this one was spotted at a depth of approximately 600 meters/1,970 feet).
