The blue ringed octopus is a small cephalopod with a deadly bite. They get their name from the conspicuous blue rings that appear on their bodies, though these are only displayed when the octopus feels threatened. Most blue ringed octopuses reach about the size of a golf ball at adult size, though they can eat prey that includes crustaceans and even fish! Their bite can be fatal to humans.

Range: along the coasts of Australia, Japan, Papua New Guinea, the Soloman Islands, the Philippines, Indonesia and Sri Lanka
Habitat: shallow waters, typically bottom dwellers
Size: up to 8in (20cm)
Diet: crustaceans and fish
Life Cycle: typically lives less than two years adults die after mating
