Blood, Sweat, and Jelly: Shared Experiences From an Unfunded Pediatric Ultrasound Research Network (AEUS, GEMA, Research Committee, and Pediatric EM Interest Group Sponsored)

Presenters:

Samuel Lam, MD, MPH
Delia Gold, MD
Kelly R. Bergmann, DO, MS

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this session, participants should be able to:
Describe essential components of multiinstitutional clinical and educational research
Recognize the challenges and downsides of unfunded network research
Apply the tips and advice from the panelists to augment their own network research studies

Traditionally, multiinstitutional network research depends on external funding for salary and logistic support, which can be a significant barrier for researchers. With technology advances, collaboration among researchers and sharing of data has become easier. The P2Network was formed in 2013 with one of its missions being to facilitate multiinstitutional pediatric emergency medicine pointofcare ultrasound research. Over the past decade, it has successfully completed several national and international clinical and educational studies, all of which received little to none external funding support. This didactic will be a panel discussion by investigators from the P2Network who have led multiinstitutional studies. Topics of discussion include essential components of multiinstitutional network research, challenges encountered and overcome, and tips on conducting unfunded network studies. Emphasis will be on feasibility of conducting pragmatic emergency department research outside of the traditional large children’s hospital setting. The goal will be to share their experience and lessons learnt generalizable to aspiring emergency medicine clinical and educational researchers, and encourage multiinstitutional collaboration to advance knowledge in the field.
