BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERON EATS EEL-LIKE SALAMANDER

Blackcrowned night heron eats an eellike salamander "an amphiuma salamander" at Lake Hollingsworth in Lakeland, Florida. The night heron persists for nearly an hour uncoiling and separating this salamander from the debris it is wrapped around, eventually swallowing the lifeless salamander whole. This amphiuma is likely about 2 feet long, having four tiny nearly useless (front and hind) legs unlike siren salamanders that have two forelimbs. Normally feeding between evening and early morning, this opportunistic night heron finds this meal "fit for a king" in the middle of the afternoon.
