Big Seal RESCUED from 45 strands of fishing line

Severe sand storms in Namibia prevented the team from Ocean Conservation Namibia (www.ocnamibia.org) from patrolling the beaches at Pelican Point for seal entanglement. Thursday evening, we got a little gap in the weather and Denzil, Naude and Antoine used the time to find this big male Cape Fur Seal adult. He had about 45 strands of fishing line wrapped around his neck and body.
Because of the heat, most of the seals were sitting close to the water and the activists had to approach the animal by car. Naude nearly missed him, but on his third attempt he managed to get him in the net. Together with Antoine, he dragged the seal back to the beach, and Denzil started with the cutting with our Leatherman Raptor Scissors. When the seal was released, he nearly bit Naude. Luckily we are always as cautious as possible and nobody got injured. We anticipate attached from the animal, they are under immense stress during the rescue.
