Varenna is a comune on Lake Como in the Province of Lecco in the Italian region of Lombardy, located about 60 kilometres north of Milan and about 20 kilometres northwest of Lecco. Varenna was founded by local fishermen in AD 769 and was later allied with the commune of Milan.

At the centre of Lake Como, on the bluff overlooking Varenna, standing for more than a thousand years is the Vezio Castle where the history, art, nature and culture of the area have blended in perfect harmony in a landscape of unparalleled natural beauty. In this old military outpost, you can visit the gardens, the dungeons and the walls, wander among the works of art, climb the tower that contains a permanent exhibition about the Lariosaurus and from where you will enjoy a magnificent 360 degree view of the lake and watch the free flight of birds of prey in our daily falconry demonstrations.
