Best Cuban Sandwich in Tampa Bay at Bodega on Central in St. Pete?

I tried a highly rated Cuban sandwich that I’ve heard a lot about at the Bodega on Central in St. Petersburg, so naturally I had to find it and get it into my belly.

For those who don’t know of this sandwich, the Cuban Sandwich was invented in Ybor City (which is a neighborhood in Tampa) in the late 1800s by Cuban immigrants, with influence from Italian immigrants. The sandwich consists of roast pork, ham, swiss or gouda, pickles, and mustard, and salami. The original included Spanish dried sausage that was later replaced with salami. It’s also served on Cuban bread, which is a lot like a French baguette.

You would think such a simple sandwich wouldn’t have controversy, but people get very protective of tasty sandwiches, so naturally there is beef between Tampa and Miami over a single ingredient. Miami refuses to accept a Cuban sandwich with salami. Even though it was invented in Tampa, because of the larger population in Miami, the nonsalami version is more popular, thus making most think that it’s the original.

The one I tried at the Bodega also left off the salami, but there is room in my heart for both versions, because they are both delicious!
