Israel's rightwing national security minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, has ignited controversy after stating in a televised interview on Channel 12 that he and his family have more rights than Arabs to travel in the West Bank.
Ben Gvir lives in a settlement in the West Bank near Hebron that is considered illegal under international law and is notorious for his discriminatory views towards Palestinians. He joined the extremist Jewish Kach party at a young age, and his farright activities have led to multiple arrests and over 50 indictments. In 2007, he was convicted of incitement to racism and supporting a terrorist organisation.
Palestinians in Israel face systemic discrimination and hostile policies. A 2021 report by the Israel Democracy Institute highlighted significant social and economic disparities between Jewish and Arab citizens.
