MOTHER EARTH

I was walking along the beach one winter day. looking down, I saw a wave push a feather up on the sand. It was a sea gull feather stained with oil. I picked it up and felt the dark slick film on my fingers. i couldn't help wondering if the bird had survived. Was it all right out there? I knew it wasn't.

I felt sad to think how carlessly we treat our home. The earth we all share is not just a rock tossed through space but a living, nurturing being. She cares for us; she deserves our care in return. We've been treating Mother Earth the way some people treat a rental apartment. Just trash it and move on.

But there's no place to move on now. We have bought our garbage and our wars and our racism to every part of the world. We must begin to clean her up, and that means cleaning up our own hearts and minds first, because they lead us to poison our dear plant. The sooner we change, the easier it will be to feel our love for Mother Earth and the love she so freely gives back to us.

Era un giorno d'inverno e stavo passeggiando lungo la spiaggia.
Guardando in basso, vidi una piuma portata a riva dalle onde.
Era la piuma di un gabbiano intrisa di petrolio.
La raccolsi e sentii la nera patina scivolosa sulla mie dita.
Non potei fare a meno di chiedermi se il gabbiano fosse riuscito a sopravvivere.
Era tutto a posto là fuori?
Sapevo di no.

Mi sentii triste nel pensare con quanta negligenza trattiamo la nostra casa.
La terra che noi tutti condividiamo non è solamente un pezzo di roccia in movimento nello spazio, ma un essere vivente.
Lei si prende cura di noi e in cambio merita che noi ci prendiamo cura di lei.
Abbiamo sempre trattato Madre Terra nello stesso modo in cui certa gente tratta un appartamento in affitto.
Lo riduci all' immondizia e poi cambia casa.

Ma ora come ora non c'è un posto dove potersi trasferire.
Abbiamo portato i nostri rifiuti, le nostre guerre e il nostro razzismo in ogni parte del mondo.
Dobbiamo iniziare a ripulire il pianeta, e questo significa dover ripulire i nostri cuori e le nostre menti per prima cosa,
perché sono stati loro che ci hanno spinto ad avvelenare il nostro caro pianeta.
Quanto prima cambiamo, tanto più facile ci risulterà amare Madre Terra e percepire l'amore che lei ci dona così incondizionatamente.
