In this video we’re going to take a look at a half dozen suggestions for different types of terrain compatible with BattleTech. Some of these are official BattleTech products, and others will be homebrewed solutions. Regardless of which solutions resonate with you, the goal is to present some options that you either didn’t know were available, or inspire you to experiment with a new direction you may not have previously explored.

BattleTech is designed at 1:285 scale, so there’s generally two gauges of model trains that I consider when looking for compatible terrain pieces. The model train “Z” gauge is the closest to BattleTech’s dimensions, at 1:220 scale. But, in my experience, “Z” gauge models and parts can sometimes be difficult to find. An alternative choice would be “N” gauge models, which, while I would consider to be compatible, their 1:160 scale proportions are roughly 150% the size of “Z” gauge. However, “N” scale models are reportedly second in popularity only to HO scale ones, potentially making a wide variety of trains and accessories available in “N” scale than “Z”. I guess it also depends on the design of the specific “N” gauge component, as some structures and terrain pieces will certainly blend in better than others. Back in college, we had a BattleTech battlefield constructed from “Z” and “N” model train components. And it was visually engaging and functional. In my experience, the biggest potential drawback to this approach is the lack of a hex grid on the terrain, so the approach of playing with rulers and measurements will most certainly need to be taken instead.
