Former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce has slammed the Cumberland Council for attempting to implement an Indigenous treaty by default.

“When we actually get a vote, people’s views are completely different to what bureaucrats and to what the enlightened like to force us,” he told Sky News hosts Danica De Giorgio and James Macpherson.

“Even in South Australia where they had a vote amongst Aboriginal people about whether they wanted a treaty.

“Only ten per cent of Aboriginal people voted.

“And they said that was a roaring success.”
